The hospital bag is where overpacking tends to begin, and baby clothes are usually the easiest place to keep it light. For the first day or two, a little goes a long way.
Most parents find a handful of pieces covers it: a couple of soft sleepers or footies, a few bodysuits, a hat and socks or booties, and something for the trip home — sized with a little room, since newborn can run small. Washed ahead of time and kept in the bag, they’re ready whenever the day arrives.
Weather and a car seat quietly shape the going-home outfit. Something with legs that separate tends to work best with harness straps, and layers you can add or remove beat one bulky piece — a thick snowsuit under a harness is one to skip.
It’s worth keeping newborn tags on at home rather than in the bag; babies arrive at their own sizes, and it’s easier to grab the right pieces once you’ve met them. A few things packed, the rest waiting at home — that’s usually the calmest version.
Pack light, wash ahead, size with room. The first outfit matters far less than having a clean, soft one within reach.
